A fireplace insert is a self-contained unit that is inserted into an existing fireplace that has exterior venting. They are available in efficient wood burning, gas and also electric. Many people convert old wood fireplaces for greater efficiency, safety and atmosphere.

Fuel Type

Wood

A classic option that produces a cozy atmosphere and can burn very hot. Wood inserts require more maintenance, such as gathering firewood and cleaning ash.

Gas

A convenient option that burns cleanly and can be controlled with a thermostat. Gas inserts are good for heating small spaces.

Electric

A convenient option that plugs into an electrical outlet. Electric inserts don't produce heat like gas or wood inserts, but they can have realistic flames.
